I had the privilege to photograph this beautiful wedding in October. I have worked with Laura with the Dayton Dragons and was honored that she wanted me to shoot her wedding!!! I am so flattered to have become this families forever photographer:) I shot Anthony's senior pictures soon after I started my business and have shot the family photos ever since. I think it was one of my first blog posts for seniors. Melissa & I were reminiscing about how young the kids were then and now we both have teenagers! I look forward to shooting family portraits & then the twins senior photos and then weddings & then grandchildren!!!

I love shooting in the summertime. Great light and usually not much rain to contend with. People are more relaxed with school being out and not many sports to get in the way. We had a great time shooting this session. The kids were ready to be photographed and it shows.

What does your headshot say about you?

You only have one chance to make a first impression. In person, a first impression will be made in 3-5 seconds. With Facebook, Linkedin your website & blog your profile photo is also a first impression. And you can’t fake it.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had quite a few branding and headshot sessions. I started really thinking about these sessions and want to share some things for you to consider if you’re contemplating options for ensuring you’re personal brand is making a great first impression.

Things to consider for your headshot:

1. Does the headshot accurately represent who you are? The headshot of today is fresh, casual and accessible. It should be a verified stamp of approval of your personal brand. Whether we like it or not, and as conveyed in this Newsweek article, we are judged on our appearance.

2. It should be a natural pose making you approachable and professional at the same time. Take your time until you feel comfortable and that your being yourself in front of the camera. A natural smile and a casual pose always make great digital personal brands.

3. Always hire a professional photographer. We like taking photos with our mobile devices, and those are likely to be casual and natural but the quality of a professional portrait can not be faked. I know I’m biased, but it’s a small investment to make in yourself and how you’re representing “you” to the public.

4. Your photo should be updated every 3-5 years, or if there’s a physical change in your appearance, i.e. change hair color from blonde to dark brown. A current headshot conveys relevance and how important investing in “you” is. Staying current on trends, personally and professionally is important and something professional photographers understand and share with customers.

Remember: If you’re going to judge a book by its cover, make the cover something professional yet memorable.

Family Photo Session

Ok so I admit I am not always excited for a photo session at Cox Arboretum. I have been there hundreds of times for sessions but every time I go I find a new location or a new take on a place I have shot before. I think it is a great challenge to take something familiar and try to view it in a different way. This family session was great for just that. The Bennions are a Loving, casual & fun family. They really just wanted photos of them just being together. They make it so easy giving me genuine emotion to capture. So much love in this family.

I attend as many photography education events as I can every year. It keeps me fresh & current. This year I thought I'd try something new. After Dark is photography education like no other. The concept is unlike anything else I have attended. It was like ADD learning for me:) From pricing, SEO & retouching to new lighting & posing concepts. We shot bridal, seniors, fashion, kids & boudoir. I loved it!! I didnt shoot a lot as I tried to watch & learn & not be distracted by my old habits:) Here are a few images I snapped during the week.

I have been working on a project with another photographer to have a boudoir studio. Doing new things like this help keep me inspired & not get burnt out. I have always loved this type of photography. soft, sensual, artistic. Women are beautiful and I love to capture that with photos. I usually dont do much studio work but as it has gotten so cold I had to move a few sessions inside. Kam is so cute & after a bit of warming up LOVES the camera just as much as it loves her:)

I was thrilled when Ann contacted me to shoot her wedding next summer in Blacksburg Virginia. I have family there so I can get a visit in at the same time:) It worked out perfectly for me to shoot their engagement session while in town for Thanksgiving. They chose the coolest little covered bridge. Even though it was freezing & super windy we managed to get some fantastic pics:) I cant wait until July!

The Cigar Factory

While in New Orleans we found the Cigar Factory. Open to the street on warm days, comfortable tables & chairs admist Torcedores quietly rolling away. They were kind enough to let me photograph them and I fell in love with the texture & warm feel of the place. Piles of moist leaves and filler tobacco being pressed all around. I just hope I did it justice.

We met to photograph sweet little Will on a beautiful sunny fall day at Young's Dairy in Yellow Springs. They had to been invited there for a company picnic anyway and it was the perfect place to capture them. I know Jeff from photographing the Dayton Dragons and was so happy to meet his family. The colors were perfect and I loved capturing the mid day sun! Will reminds me a lot of Barrett when he was little and he even had a dinosaur costume just like this one:)

The Edmondsons were neighbors of mine until they out grew their house and now are on their way on out growing another. With their 6th child on the way Julie really wanted to celebrate her final pregnancy with a family photo shoot. I know I say it every time but I really do love shooting seniors. This was our second attempt to shoot on the field. That field gets a lot of use and we had to beat the arrival of the pee wee players on a sunday morning. Stephen has played football for Springboro since 3rd grade so It was only fitting that we shoot there. We also hit the studio to get some more formal shots but were able to have some fun with the flaming football. No better way to end a session than to light something on fire:)

A good friend of mine asked me to come to Louisville to her Grandfathers 100th birthday party and take some family photos. Of course I said yes. I had a great time shooting Aisha last week. Being an artist she was looking for something a bit different for her senior photos. She knew exactly what my vision was for each shot. It made it so easy!!! I never had to tell her how to sit or pose. I think we are just on the same wavelength. Scary I know:) I have been extremely busy so I havent gotten through all of them yet but just wanted to tease her a bit with this one. I think she has the most beautiful profile. We had so much fun at Benham's Grove in Centerville even though it was sweltering hot and we had to battle swarms of mosquitoes! It had been forever since I posted but I have a good excuse. Family vacation!!!! This year we took the kids on a cruise with some friends. We had a blast on the ship in Grand Cayman & Cozumel. Last month I had the greatest opportunity to go to the PictageU Boudoir & lighting seminar in San Diego. My trip was fantastic. This was my first trip to SD, so along with the classes I took some time to do some sightseeing. Wine tasting in Temecula, hanging out on Pacific beach dinner & drinks in the Gas Lamp district. I also LOVED this seminar. The instructors were all so different and had so much to offer us. We spent time with classroom instruction and then got to shoot with each of them. Each set up was so unique. I felt like I got so much variety and took something valuable from each one. I cant wait for the next PictageU as the team put together a stellar program.

Late weekend was great. I love Memorial day as it is the start of the summer. We spent lots of time at the pool, with friends cooking out & managed to get a few photo sessions in. This one was fantastic. Jodie had called me and wanted a family photo session, nothing to traditional as you can see they are not a traditional family. So fun & a bit funky:) I just love the contrast of the innocence of childhood and the grunge & dirt of downtown. It was really hot but they were all troopers. Heres your sneak peek:)

I try to shoot & create a book every year for my children right around their birthday. For Reagan this year we decided to shoot in historic downtown Springboro. I love that as she looks back she can always remember where she grew up. The video slideshow is new for me. It evokes such emotion to combine the images with movement and music. We had so much fun with this shoot. Makes me want to book a session for myself. Boudoir photography is a very personal thing. I know that some people dont get it but it is something you can do for yourself to reveal your true beauty. It celebrates who you are now and that you are as beautiful as any woman in any magazine.

While in Vegas I was lucky enough to get to participate in a model shoot for a great charity, The Portrait House. It was held at the beautiful Las Vegas Country Club. Although a bit rainy I got some beautiful shots of some georgeous couples & learned a few things from Justin & Mary. Thanks to the Fablous Laura Marchbanks for organizing. Reagan is in LOVE with horses. She takes her riding lessons very serious and has such a natural way around them. When we are at the barn I make sure to be at least two steps back from the giants but she is not scared or intimidated, she is respectful but is in control. Pretty impressive for an almost 9 year old. She says she wants to be a vet or riding instructor when she grows up. She really does have a natural way around them. Her birthday is in a few weeks and she wants to have a cowgirl birthday party so we decided to make our own invitations. Here is a start.

The Italians did not like photos taken of the art. As you can see I snuck in a few:) David is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I think it is one of those things that you have to experience to understand.

Paris day 3

We packed as much as we could into our short stay in Paris. This is a long post:)

We started the day at the Rodin Museum.

Then on to the Musee D Orsay. It is the most beautiful museum I have ever been in. The use of natural light and the staging of the exhibits is beyond compare.

Notre Dame

Off for a walking tour of the city. We stayed in Rue Cler, a quaint neighborhood we felt right at home in.

We made it to the 2nd tier of the tower and walked down. It was freezing!!!!

Paris day 2

We started day 2 with the Arch De Triumph. There is so much history carved in every side it is hard to take it all in. They view from the top is spectacular.

I am fighting the urge to liquify myself a bit here:)

Champs de Elysee.

We did a ton of walking and just hopped into what we thought might be interesting. We found so many beautiful churches, stores, cafes and bars that way.

The frescos were breathtaking!!

Montmartre and Sacre Coeur at night are brilliant.

We wondered into the greatest restaurant off of any alley somewhere.

Paris Day 1

It is so true that every room in Paris has a great view of the Eiffel Tower. But I loved the view from the gardens the best. You really were able to see the scale & beauty of it there.

The ficade of the Louvre was so beautiful. We caught it at sunset so it was warm & stoic at the same time.

I seem to procrastinate more & more each year in getting my images for my personal christmas card. My intention this year was to have a family photo done but as you can see we never made it. Since returning from Europe it has been a whirlwind. Reuniting with the kids, catching up on editing and fall family shoots put me a bit behind. I just downloaded the photos from Paris & this is the first shot I took of the tower. It was amazing to see in person. I know most of the French consider it an eyesore on the city but it is magnificent for us tourists. There will be so many more photos to come as soon as I get through them.

I was so thrilled when Elizabeth contacted me to shoot her senior photos. There is a TON of competition for this market. Not only did she want to start at the barn where she rides:) but I had photographed her sister a few years ago and adore this family. I dont know how they do it but these girls are remarkable. Not only are they beautiful and comfortable in who they are, they also have the brains to go with it. I hope I can do as good of a job with my children.

We had a great time shooting at Celebration Farms and then on to Lebanon. Elizabeth was so sweet to laugh at my lack of good jokes and they even made me cookies......YUMMY

It really warms my heart to have clients that I truly connect with. It is really the best part of my job.

My friend Patti was so nice this summer to help me with one of my weddings. I could not have done it without her. In return I offered to photograph her family. Isnt bartering a wonderful thing? Her children are so cute & fun. What a great mother she is and they just have an easy close connection to each other. It was fun to capture this for them.

So senior shoot are fast becoming one of my favorite sessions to shoot. I love taking them around town discovering all of the interesting places to shoot. Kristen was up for anything. When we got to our first location she said " I am not photogenic, so you will have to help me" Are you kidding me???? She is stunning! We had a blast and I know she got a kick out of me being so excited & such a dork to shoot her pics. Oh & by the way I think her beauty runs in the family;)

I have known Carey Ann our whole lives so this wedding was more than a job for me. Being a part of this special day and capturing it for them was an honor. It was a beautiful and intimate ceremony and the location couldnt have been more fitting. We all grew up visiting lake James in Angola In. so seeing her get married over looking the lake is about as perfect as it gets. Matt was a handsome and emotional groom and they let me have free reign. (I love clients who trust me!) Here are a few images of their day.

I have never photographed fireworks before so it was really fun for the kids & I to listen for the launch and trigger the shutter at the right time. We ended up with some great ones. I was lucky enough to get to tag along & shadow Carmen & Amanda of Blink of an Eye Photography for Lauren & George's wedding. I cant tell you how valuable it is for me to be able to see such a seasoned, talented photographer at work. Every time I shoot I learn more but in this case my head was spinning. Jessica & Colin are the sweetest couple. So loving and in tune with each other. I cant imagine the work that went into this wedding. They planned everything long distance. It was a beautiful and touching ceremony and we had a blast at the reception. was a little nervous shooting the wedding but they were so kind to me and made me feel like a part of the family. We kept the day stress free by having a day after shoot. We met at the Dayton Art Institute the day after the wedding for some informal portraits. Here are a few images of their day and the day after.

I can't believe that my son has turned 11! I dosent seem that that much time has passed since I held him in my arms for the first time. It is such a joy to see him develop from a child into a young man. As a parent I think you always wonder what your child will be like as an adult and I can now see some of his traits coming through. He is very sincere and loyal, he is a good friend and he is one of the funniest people I know. Happy Birthday Barrett.
